| Downtown Torpedoes (1997)
Director: Teddy Chan
Chan, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Charlie Yeung, Teresa Lee
Don't let the weird title fool you,
there are no torpedoes or submarines in this cool, James Bond-esque
action mystery! Follow a team of elite espionage artists as they attempt
to swipe some valuable banknote plates from the British government!
Formulaic but fun!
Jackal (Kaneshiro) and Cash (Chan) are
two top secret agents working for Available Tactical Mercenaries (ATM).
ATM is a secret agency providing industrial espionage services for hire.
Upon their return to Hong Kong, after an assignment at Germany, both
Jackal and Cash are arrested by the G Team, Hong Kong Government's
Secret Service. Also arrested are Sam (Young), a cyberhacker and Titan,
a former guerrilla. They are brought together by Stanley, head of the
G-Team , to help steal an almost flawless engraved printing plate used
to print the English Sterling.
At first, the four members of ATM
refuse to help. But Stanley threatens to expose their illegal occupation
and has also frozen their bank accounts. They have no choice but to
accept the ‘job'. After close observation and planning, the team manages
to get hold on the printing plate.
But the joy is short-lived when they
find out that they have been shortchanged by Stanley. Instead of giving
them their new passport and payment, Stanley in exchange for the
printing plate, gives them a briefcase which explodes. Now, without the
printing plate and passport, the ATM team has to find a way to clear
their name and also to get back at the man who set them up.
