Wang Dawei, a 7-year-old boy, follows his father
into town for selling vegetables. Occasionally, he sees the performance
of the students from opera school and is steeped in it. He somersaults
onto the stage and asks for acceptance. He becomes a member of the
school and begins to learn to be a "clown", one of the four main role
types in Peking Opera.
Life in opera school is not easy. Dawei studies
hard and makes great progress, gradually he also manages to get along
well with the other students. The first play Dawei learns is San Cha
Kou. Together with other students, he performs that play in his hometown
and is much welcomed.
