Needing You (2000)
孤男寡女
Director: Johnnie To, Wai
Ka Fai
Starring: Andy
Lau, Sammi Cheng
Johnny To took a break from the Triad scene to
craft this little gem of a romantic comedy staring two of Hong Kong's
biggest pop stars, Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng. This featherweight romantic
comedy with nary a corpse in view is a far departure from To's trademark
blood-spattered machismo. Lau is the primary star, but the spotlight is
stolen by Sammi Cheung in arguably her best screen role.
Kinki (Sammi Cheng) is a quirky love lorn sales
agent who comes across as Ally McBeal's poorer Hong Kong cousin. Like
Ally, she searches for her knight in shining armor. Eventually she runs
runs into Andy (Andy Lau), a womanizing divorced sales manager who is
initially annoyed with her. However, his affections grow for Kinki,
despite his efforts to ignore them.
But then Fiona, Andy's old flame, enters the scene
and can see that there's a spark between Andy and Kinki that she has to
extinguish. But just when Andy realizes that he needs Kinki in his life,
he finds some unexpectedly tough competition in Roger Young, a young and
handsome internet billionaire.
The acting was well done by the leads especially
Sammi who played her strange but extremely likable character very well.
And a fairly simple script with sharp visuals make for one enjoyable
movie. Johnny To translates his dramatic visual flare to this film, also
adding in some very interesting special effects that really complement
and strengthen the film.
