Reincarnation of Golden Lotus (1989)

Director: Clara Law

Starring: Joey Wong, Eric Tsang, Pal Sin, Wilson Lam

"Once upon a time, there was an unfaithful wife...'' Probably not how it really begins, but close enough for our purposes. ""It'', in this case, is "The Story of Golden Lotus", either one of the classics of Chinese Literature, or one of the most widely-read porn novels of all time, depending on who, and when, you ask. One thing everyone agrees on, however: the story ends with the aforementioned unfaithful wife, Lotus, getting her head chopped off.

After Lotus' death, her ghost refuses to take the final draught of the Potion of Forgetfulness, drunk before reincarnation; she does not desire surcease, she wants revenge.

In due course, she is reincarnates just before the Cultural Revolution to take revenge on everyone who wronged her in the past. We shuttle back and forth between wooden period tableaux and mundane modern-day happenings as she reverts to her old self, and becomes the luckless prey of various abusive men. Through the carefully threaded flashbacks to the Sung Dynasty, she comes to the realization that she is the reincarnation of the "number one" courtesan of ancient China.
