Young And Dangerous : The Prequel (1998)

Director: Andrew Lau

Starring: Nicholas Tse, Francis Ng, Shu Qi, Sam Lee

In our opinion, one of the best in the Young And Dangerous series. Tastefully directed by Andrew Lau, and a very satisfying look at the late teen years of our favorite group of Hung Hing triad members.

This sixth episode in the Young And Dangerous saga follows young Ho Nam, Pao Pai, Chau Pai, and Chicken through their late teen years, when they first became involved with Bee and the Hung Hing gang. If you've followed the series, and you're curious to learn more about the characters, then this episode will certainly not disappoint.

While this episode mostly follows a young Chan Ho Nam through his initiation into the triad, you should also check out "Those Were The Days", which documents Chicken's elementary school days; and "Portland Street Blues", which tells the history of Sister 13 (Sandra Ng).

The film score also surpasses the norm, featuring some very soulful solo acoustic guitar passages. These passages fit their scenes perfectly and add a great organic depth that is very rare in contemporary Chinese film scores. Keep an ear out for these musical treats.
